I pay for 100 mb, but I only get 55

Hi, 

 

I’m paying for internet Maxi. Advertised, it is 100 Mbps. 

 

I never see that. I’m told by the technician who visits the house to analyse, that it is because of the “distance” I’m away from the closest center. 

 

Can you tell me dear Proximus, why should I care? You should be doing the necessary investments in our neighborhood, if you are charging double. If not, don’t advertise. 

 

What’s the solution to this situation?

Hi,

How do you measure your connection ? is that over wifi or with a wired connection ?

Indeed a lot depends on your distance to the ROP (Remote optical platform)

They advertise with Max 100 but not everyone gets the maximum speed, me too have 85

A subscription, such as “Maxi”, never determines the speed, the speed is determined by the attenuation of your line, to which your bbox is connected,
(attenuation that is most determined by the length of the line)

A subscription determines more the possibilities, f.e.g. a subscription “Start”, limits your maximum speed of your line to 50Mbps, even if your line could handle up to 100Mbps, who is the max speed for VDSL2 over cupper lines, and for Maxi you get unlimited internet volume, for start 100 GB/month….

Your download speed at home depends mainly on the distance between the connection point and the exchange, your computer installation and the indoor cabling. Only if those three are optimal, will you be able to enjoy the maximum speed.

what you can do is check if you have reaches the maximum guaranteed line speed.

You can compare the results as existing customer and as new cutomer.

If you have a Bbox3 from Sagemcom, you can also use the Sagem tool 0.13
to read your line values (speed on which your bbox synchronise) to estimate the concrete situation

It shows me that Max speed I can get is 84 mb. Min speed is 61, which is also not something I get. 

 

I never get above 60 mb on a best day. Ever. 

 

I suppose Proximus needs to investigate it further, as this is really not acceptable. Voo provides 400 mb for a similar price. I don’t want to move, but if push comes to shove I have no choice.

@sidarok Proximus cannot exceed 100Mbps at the moment, even in the best condition, e.g. if your line you are connected to, is no longer than about 400m.  Now they are busy installing fiber optics, but before it will be in every street, that can take a long time!

 

If possible, your line speed can be increased by an automatic line measuring system called DLM.

This will try to increase your line speed on a regular basis, but it will monitor whether the stability of your line remains in order and also for the other customers who branch off from the same distribution cable as you.

And run it, where you must log in as a User and with a User password that you can find on a sticker of the bbox.

Also if someone from the proximus forum team , if they come here, can check the status of the DLM's evaluation.

One more note if you run a speed test -> http://pxs.speedtestcustom.com/.
Then it is not recommended to perform this via WiFi, but with, for example, a laptop or PC that is directly connected with a network cable to the bbox modem itself.
However, if this is not possible for you, you can use another device, e.g. a smartphone, to do the speedtest on wifi-5.0-xxxx (SSID = name of  wireless 5.0Mhz signal from the bbox) , while you are very close to the bbox modem

Can you add your client number to your profile so we can do some checks on the line?

Let me be clear in this, you will never pay for your internet speed. You always pay for the volume of internet monthly. In the case of an internet Maxi, that is unlimited.

Only with fiber optics possible you can exceed the maximum speed of VDSL2 which is 100Mbps. Keep in mind that VOO uses a different technology where higher speeds are possible: coax , while VDSL2 uses still the telephone wires. But you can suffer also of speed drops when other people in the neighborhood are downloading,streaming and uploading a lot when connected to coax. Keep in mind with VOO you need to do some extra expenses: external coax cable that need to be connected to the distribution point, also a NUI need to placed to connect your tv’s,.. When you want to compare you need to add those expenses with the subscription.
